Kate Chopin: The Awakening

Our club has chosen the short novella The Awakening to read for the month of February. We chose this book because primarily it was something we could read in a short amount of time, and also one that none of the members had yet gone through. Chopin’s book is set in the end of the 19th Century, in Louisiana. There is a lot of mention regarding this book and it being a kind of proto-feminist work. We will see!

I ordered three copies for the club, and they came in record time, with really discount prices of only 5 USD. I ordered them on monday night (the first night of the club) and they arrived today being thursday. To my surprise, the books were magazine sized! With a rapid turn over and discount rate, I don’t suppose one can ask for high quality; that being said having a novella magazine sized seems ridiculous, and the cover image is of snowy mountains. This is totally bizarre seeing as though it is a southern Romantic novel.

I am looking forward to seeing how this book is. I started it today and the prose is excellent. I believe the style is Naturalism, and Chopin is highly regarded. We shall see!

Well! Onward for the Love of Lit!
